The Final Miles of MHOR 2025

Race Report 5:15pm: After nearly 24 hours at sea, the front-runners of the Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race are pushing hard toward the finish. Temptation/Oakcliff leads the fleet in both elapsed and corrected time, with Boudicca – Gill Race Team close behind. Dream Crusher has recorded one of the fastest VMGs, while Scowling Dragon looks set to challenge late with the highest distance sailed thus far.

Temptation is estimated to finish tonight around 18:50 ADT, followed by Boudicca at approximately 19:39 ADT. If conditions remain favorable, Dream Crusher’s efficient VMG suggests a finish later this evening, with Scowling Dragon needing a late rally.

Wind & Weather at the Finish Line

At the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, finishing boats are sailing into light and variable winds, clocking around 10–12 knots from the southwest—ideal for setting powerful downwind sails but also demanding savvy navigation to hold onto speed.

The current forecast shows mostly cloudy and humid conditions through Wednesday, with the potential for showers and thunderstorms Tuesday morning. This means precise tide and wind timing could be key for those boats arriving amid those shifts.

What We’re Watching

  • Line HonorsTemptation/Oakcliff remains the favorite tonight, though Dream Crusher’s aggressive VMG could put them in contention for top honors if they maintain momentum.
  • Corrected Time Battles: In ORR1, split seconds from the start will matter—Boudicca is well-positioned to challenge.
  • Fleet Flow: Will Scowling Dragon’s extra mileage pay off, or will lighter winds slow the chase pack?

Notable Performances

As the fleet charges into the final leg of the Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race, several yachts are turning in standout performances—whether by raw speed, tactical gains, or resilience. Here’s a closer look at the boats making headlines:

Temptation/Oakcliff – Elite Execution

  • Position: 1st
  • VMG: 10.9 knots
  • Distance Sailed: 346.1 NM
  • Estimated Finish: July 7, 18:50 ADT
Temptation/Oakcliff has put on a masterclass in sustained performance. With the best Velocity Made Good (VMG) in the top 5 and the shortest Distance To Finish (30.9 NM), they’ve controlled this race from the front, sailing efficiently and fast in testing conditions. A potential line honors and corrected-time victory looms.

Overdraft X – Blistering Speed from the Back

  • Position: 9th
  • VMG: 15.6 knots (highest in the fleet)
  • Distance Sailed: 250.9 NM
  • ETA: 22:59 ADT
Though mid-fleet on position, Overdraft X has logged the highest VMG of the entire fleet. Likely surfing down a pressure system, this late-stage charge could see them vault several places if the trend holds. One to watch overnight.

Dream Crusher – Speed with Precision

  • Position: 4th
  • VMG: 10.5 knots
  • Distance Sailed: 328.9 NM
Dream Crusher is the only yacht besides Temptation/Oakcliff to maintain a VMG over 10 knots, while also sailing a smartly direct line. If they continue at this pace, a corrected-time podium isn’t out of reach.

Scowling Dragon – High Mileage, Low Return

  • Position: 3rd
  • Distance Sailed: 350.4 NM (most in the fleet)
  • VMG: 5.6 knots
Scowling Dragon may be in 3rd place on the tracker, but their course has cost them. Logging the most miles sailed while maintaining the slowest VMG in the top five could indicate less favorable routing or time stuck in light air. Still, their perseverance keeps them in the hunt.

Black Watch & Orion – Mid-fleet Rockets

  • VMG: Black Watch – 8.5 knots | Orion – 8.5 knots
  • Both yachts are punching above their positions with excellent VMG readings. As night falls, they are ideally placed to capitalize on weather shifts and move up the leaderboard.

Blitzen – Safe but Out

  • Status: RETIRED
  • Cause: Water ingress at rudder post
  • Blitzen was forced to retire after a serious technical issue. Thanks to decisive action by the crew to reduce sail, the issue stabilized. The boat is motoring safely back to Marblehead. All crew are well.

Fleet Movers (VMG > 8 knots):

  • Temptation/Oakcliff – 10.9 knots
  • Dream Crusher – 10.5 knots
  • Overdraft X – 15.6 knots
  • Privateer – 9.0 knots
  • Redwood / Oakcliff – 8.8 knots
  • Black Watch – 8.5 knots
  • Orion – 8.5 knots
  • Lynx – 8.6 knots
  • Oakcliff Farr 40 Blue – 8.0 knots
